Impacts of a biocontrol agent on invasive Ageratina adenophora in Southwest China: Friend or foe?

چکیده
Classical biological control of invasive plants depends on the introduction host-specific natural enemies. Many enemies have provided successful control, but impacts herbivorous insects their hosts are highly variable and context dependent. Under some circumstances, overcompensation can even occur, with plant reproduction temporarily increasing rather than decreasing in response to herbivory. The stem-galling fly Procecidochares utilis has been widely introduced help Ageratina adenophora, a globally significant weed, its impact inconsistent places ineffective. Its galling is known stimulate production side branches under laboratory conditions. We examined abundance P. at four A. adenophora sites Southwest China that were invaded different times support densities insect. Stems galls more likely be branched produced capitula. Furthermore, seed numbers capitula from galled un-galled stems similar, resulted only slightly reduced weights. However, increase above-ground vegetative biomass associated branching less efficient capitulum relative growth. Clearly not providing effective biocontrol so far. In long term, may display competitive ability lower lifetime reproductive success, short term increases it generates suggest favouring host’s range expansion. agent dry area Hawii, understanding factors determine effectiveness represent major challenge for future.

Sustainable management based on biological control and ecological restoration of an alien invasive weed, Ageratina adenophora (Asteraceae) in China
Crofton weed, Ageratina adenophora (Sprengel) R. King and H. Robinson, originally from Central America, was introduced into China in the 1940s. The weed spreads rapidly and is seriously damaging grasslands and hindering livestock production in southwestern China. To tackle the weed problem and allow the sustainable use of pastures, an integrated strategy, based on biological control and habitat...

Malignant papillary neoplasms of the breast comprise a number of microscopically distinct lesions, where apocrine metaplasia is commonly found in papillomas compared to other papillary lesions including papillary carcinomas. However, association of apocrine metaplasia in papilloma with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) is not very well defined. The lesions with apocrine metaplasia are not only di...
متن کاملAntioxidants - friend or foe?
Particularly in the field of advertising and in popular scientific journals, antioxidants such as β-carotene (from carrots) or lycopenes (from tomatoes) and the vitamins C and E are one-sidedly portrayed as substances capable of offering protection against cancer or ageing because they diminish or prevent the effects of free radicals. However, free radicals should by nomeans be considered as be...

For many years, β-defensins were best known for their antimicrobial activity. However, β-defensins also exert immunomodulatory functions, such as the chemotactic recruitment of immune cells via chemokine receptors. We demonstrated that mouse β-defensin 14 recruits CCR6(+) B cells into fibrosarcomas, resulting in enhanced angiogenesis and tumor development.
